Nice place to go
Excellent place to eat. The staff there is great and the bartender are wonderful
great staff, great food, great drinks, and I found some great Cowboys fans
Very strong drinks, just how mi like it . I havent tried the food personally but my friends say its good
The food is always been legendary what's a great atmosphere
Good food chill area low key
AWEFUL!! Smelled like urine and older blond waitress treated us like garbage. Left without ordering anything! DONT EAT HERE!
Delicious food! Great staff, wish I had found it sooner! Definitely coming back!
Always a great place to grab drinks. The bartenders are excellent and the food comes out perfect every time.
Good food nice staff
I had the chimicangas queso style and it was descent. Their salsa is authentic, homemade, and delicious. The daily drink specials are great. If you like a laid back, low key restaurant, with good music and good service this is the spot.
The service is constantly speedy, awesome vibes, super friendly staff members. Will come back again when I arrive in the area.
Food was good. Service was great
The food at this place was fair at best. I've had better Mexican food at every local place in the greater New Haven area. The place was very dated. Service was good.
The bartender's attitude was horrid. I was very close to acting like someone I try not to be. She was rude and unnecessary. She insisted my guest leave her seat 4 ft away from her at the bar to then study her face and ID close. It was extreme and I promptly left before I snatched those dentures .... nevermind. We left asap & went to SOUL DE CUBA a block away. Great food & drinks.
My chicken burrito was excellent. Good drinks and friendly staff. What is not to like?
The bartender uses the trash can with her bare hands to aide herself from behind the bar... That's unsanitary. Left a bad taste in my mouth.
The food is gross❌Salsa was mostly ketchup ❌Chips tasted sweet ❌Cheese was gross
Not impressed. Had better with more flavor.
From an someone who's addicted to Mexican food This place has fair price and very generous portion -- the quesadillas and salads (especially the crispy taco) are my favorite. Will revisit!
The service was great the wings are fantastic and the drinks were good
Been coming here for many years...I love it...the food is amazing, the drinks are great, and the service is great.😁
Went for Happy hour They have the most amazing margaritas Their cajun rub wings are the best.
I love the food here and I love the ambience especially on the weekends you can go there and have a great time with your friends and there’s no drama at all
The food was amazing. But the downside is a bitter waitress takes away from it. Everything with her is "I can't" whoever heard of such in a restaurant? My friend asked her to take some ice out of her glass and the waitress said, "I can't or I would have to charge you $1.00 extra for her drink." That makes no sense.
One of my all-time favorite Mexican restaurants! I first went there in the 70s and it is still there same as always! Cool dark lighting and interesting decorations! Food fun and inexpensive!
A place where I took a date that's still with me, some 30 yr later. Go there for simple wannabe Mexican fare, booze and an atmosphere that doesn't change.
One of the greatest original New Haven downtown destinations. Have the nachos and a pitcher of house margaritas. Chill and live real.
Do not be fooled by this small establishment. It has a more American ambience look to it. But let me tell you that the food was 100% authentic. The sour cream texture was to perfection, the pico the gallo, one of the best I've tasted and my favorite thing was the perfection of the homemade tortillas. We had chicken and steak fajitas. Both, the chicken and the steak were flavored and cooked to perfection. It's too bad we were just passing by and don't live in the area. I loved the quality of the food and service. Hope to visit you guys again sometime ❤
Cathy is my girl. 50% of the experience is for nachos, the other 50% is for hanging out with Cathy (Note: She only works weekends!).New Haven has a lot of restaurant options but Viva Zapata is the only one I'm consistently coming back to.
My sister and I meet up here every Friday evening and order honey buffalo wings and the Cajun wings and a pitcher of flavored margarita all delicious our sister time to unwind
Food was terrible, had to cancel our order and leave after the appetizers. Chips were old and stale
Met up with some co-workers for some drinks and appetizers. The Margaritas were very good and the appetizers were delicious. The bartender could use some lessons in being polite
Great place to get together with friends, apps are great and the drinks are better
Would recommend this place. Foods pretty good and they woman waiting on us was really nice. Stop into this place if you get a chance. And don't forget to carve your name in one of the tables. It's a tradition.
I've been going there with family since I was a kid. Food is always good and margaritas and yummy. The children nachos are a must!
Nice hole in the wall feel. the Bartender actually knows how to make drinks!
This is an outstanding Mexican restaurant. The staff is delightful and the atmosphere is very cozy. One of my favorite spots in New Haven
Great food (the only I've found in the area even approaching Tex-Mex). The staff is friendly and helpful. They have great beers on draft, and prices are good.
Always great to get away, awesome barstaff, good selection, and a uniquely dark and comfy atmosphere. Plus a jukebox for the last zone of comfort. A must any late night!!!
Very unique atmosphere with great Mexican food. Fantastic burgers as well!!
Great atmosphere (I like dives), excellent service (by any standard), but the food is kind of mediocre. If you want a bite to eat and a few drinks with friends, Viva Zapata is for you. If you just want good Mexican food, head to La Cosinita a few doors down.
A pretty awesome spot for locals. Love the service and atmosphere.
Omgggg the Mexican food has and always is authentic and delicious...salsa ..guacomole..all made fresh including the tortilla..sangria is always...refreshing...my sis nikki and i enjoyed it and she is hard to please..and buffalo wings..so good..
Excellent nachos, the margarita was amazing, and I had the Mexican chicken, it was very good. I will definitely go back there and try more of the menu.
I ordered the build your own nachos and they were disgusting. I've never had nachos made with American cheese it has always been like a Mexican blend. I thought that was the basic cheese for this Mexican dish -_-. I asked if they were affiliated with the Viva Zapata in Westport and they are not and it is clear why. I'd take the drive to Westport any day over this place. They didn't even offer me my money back so once I saw that I opted to pay and I will NEVER go back. Charmaine the waitress was nice and the mango margarita was good, but the guy behind the bar for one reason or another felt the need to keep reminding me that there was extra costs associated with the build your own nachos. It was CLEARLY printed on the menu so I have no idea why he would keep informing me of what I can read. Would definitely not go back
My favorite place. Me and the ladies hang out spot. They have the best wings and strawberry daiquiri.
The wings were good, but the service could have been better.
Great drinks and amazing wings! A hidden gem
